IN MEMORY OF...

...THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR US.

In Flanders Fields
by Lt. Col. John McCrae (1872-1918)

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
— Lt.-Col. John McCrae (1872 - 1918)

Local folks often recall the lush poppies Charlie Bullis grew in his garden. As he planted and tended these red symbols of sacrifice, could he have been remembering his comrades who died in World War I? We'll never know Charlie's reason for his choice of flowers, but it seems appropriate to us today.

When we make our traditional poppy purchases this weekend, let's remember Charlie Bullis, his WWI comrades and all those before and after who made that supreme sacrifice.

Does anyone in the Bullis family know anything about my great grandfather who was a scout for General Bulllis? At the General’s death he left a provision with the General sister to pay him $20.00 each month for saving his life, which she faithfully did. The men at Fort Sam knew him as the "The PARSON," The man who saved the General.
He lived behind him on CARSON STREET, San Antonio. His name was Milton A Martinez, short and very dark, died in 1954-102 years old. His first language was his native tongue and then Spanish and spoke good English. He made fun of my other Great grandfather, Blessing, who was German, saying he was hard to understand. He said Blessing died on board a ship in the S-A War. My grandmother Blessing did not get to meet her dad. She was born Dolores Blessing Flores at Fort Davis. Does anyone know how “The Parson” saved the general’s life? Was it in Cuba or at Fort Davis? And what is my great grandfathers Blessing first name who died on ship where? Did Blessing serve with General at Fort Davis and in Cuba? Dad told me he died in the harbor? Havana?
